Reading: By modeling €œwhat good readers do€ the students are able to learn various reading strategies through multiple avenues. The teacher begins by modeling the strategies through Read Alouds, which enables students to see, hear, and participate in acting out the strategies being used.  Then Students apply and practice the same strategies during Reading Groups and Independent Reading.

Writing/Spelling: In our First grade classrooms, we provide many opportunities for students to practice the writing skills that they are learning. The First Grade teacher models writing by using the Six Traits of Writing, this model helps describe what €œgood writing€ looks like. Our Spelling program is integrated within the writing. It is a word study and the goal is to help young writers collect tools for figuring out how a word is spelled.

 Everyday Math: This program gives a child a wide range of mathematical experiences and ideas. It is a spiral curriculum, which means that a specific concept is taught five times within two years, giving a child many opportunities to grasp that concept when they are developmentally ready to do so.

Science/Social Studies: Our science curriculum helps a child to acquire knowledge of the world around them, as well as learning concepts from investigations.  This helps to develop the ability to ask scientific questions. The Social Studies curriculum helps a child learn to extend their knowledge throughout the world around them.
