 Social Studies/Science

Our Social Studies program consists of these major units:  Geography and Landforms, Colorado Wildlife, Colorado History, Flight, Solar System, Inventors, and Water.  Students will be instructed on the scientific method and given opportunities to apply it as we go through some of our different units. Colorado Wildlife integrates all subject areas together where students wil learn about the six life zones as well as the plants and animals of our state.   Colorado History will involve students learning about the different populations and expansion of our state as well as the contributions of the Native Americans, Explorers, Trappers, Traders, Miners, Settlers, and Reformers in making Colorado what it is today.  Our Flight Unit will introduce students to the forces of flight and gravity.  We will study map skills, landforms, and geography.  Foss Educational Kits, researched based kits develped at Berkley, California provide students with hands-on-experiences that make learning fun, memorable and challenging.  The Scientific Thinking Process is built into the Foss learning material and teaches hands on learning developmentally.

Math

"Everyday Math" is the math program used by our district.  It allows students to take everyday experiences and find the math in them.  Everyday Math combines tradition with the best of today's math concepts, instruction, and skills together.  Computation of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, place value, estimation, measurement, money, probability, statistics, geometry, fractions, problem solving, and decimals will be studied.

You can print or save a copy of the rubrics that fourth grade teachers use to grade your child's papers.  Students are given a rubric ahead of time to help them understand the expectations, but if you want a head start or if a rubric gets lost here is some great information.                                           Just click:  District Language Arts Standards and Rubrics.

Language Arts

Our Language Arts program consists of Spelling, Read/Write Connection, Write Source, Six Traits, and Reading adopted by the district called ICALL.  This is accomplished using a balanced literacy philosophy.  Students will be guided through literature books and skills will be connected through both their reading and writing.  A variety of spelling strategies will be shared and discussed using patterns and language connections.  Students will write summary sentences, topic sentences, paragraphs using descriptive and transitional words, and be required to complete reports and research papers.  Students will learn the basics of two column note taking and use a variety of genres.
