Spelling

Week 13

Challenge Words:   electricity, power, glistening, crackling, automatic

Each week your child should bring home a list of 15 spelling words and 5 challenge words. They should study their words each night for the final test on Friday. Use the yellow worksheet, "30 Ways to Study Your Spelling Words", for ideas. Students should be transfering the pattern they are learning each week to their everyday writing. Remember, we are learning patterns each week, so students can spell other words. For example, if you can spell slice (cv magic e) you should be able to spell spike.

 Reading/Writing

The Rigby strategy we are working on is inferring. This is where students use their own ideas in their head, plus what they learned in the text (book) to make a new conclusion what they are reading. As they read, students may find part of their answers in the text. The goal is to help increase their understanding of what they are reading. Students can use more than one strategy to help them understand what they are reading.

We have focused on:

Make Connections-connect what you are reading to to yourself, another text, or to the world.

Ask Questions- text to self text to text, and text to world.

In addition, students will bring home reading and writing activities to help keep the skills they are learning fresh. Assignments will vary and have a different focus each week. Working on these skills with your child as they read with you, to you and independently at home will them become more successful.

In the classroom, students will be reading stories and learning how to answer questions that go along with each. It is important that students use part of the question in their answer and remember to use capitals and punctuation. We are also working on formulating a question from information they are learning in both fiction and non-fiction text. This leads to higher-level thinking!

Math

We are working on Unit 3. You can find the unit goals on the website on the Third Grade main webpage. It would be helpful if your child practiced addition and subtraction facts each night. This will help them with automaticity. Use the Family Letter to help with the nightly homework assignments. This is also on the Third Grade webpage.

Social Studies

We are focusing on Geography and Communities. Students are learning about how communities are similar and different around the world. We will continue to focus on economics.

Students will create a map of their community as a culminating activity.  Thanks for all of your help at home.

Did you know Hunters Glen has a weather station on the roof (at the NE corner). Use the link below if you would like to continue to monitor the weather.
