Computer Happenings with Mrs. Velasquez
Throughout the school year your child is in the computer lab for a total of seven weeks. Here are some of the projects your child may be working on:
Kindergarten: Learning to access different pieces of software. Navigating with the mouse. Transitioning to a different classroom with a different teacher.
First Grade: Microsoft Word-Typing capitals, one space between words, pressing enter to get to the next line, using the arrow keys on the keyboard to navigate around the document, using backspace to delete and correct, adding borders and clip art.
Kid Pix-a drawing program which we use for our geography, plant, and moon units.
KidPix-Students create a slide show about the rock cycle using pictures they have drawn.
Powerpoint-Students create a geography Powerpoint using a template.
Third Grade: Microsoft Word-Students learn more of the features of Word such as: spell check, alignment buttons, and formatting.
Powerpoint-Students create a Powerpont about the Human Body. They do Internet research about the heart, bones, and muscles and then create the Powerpoint.
Fourth Grade: Microsoft Word-Students learn to bold, underline, italicize, change fonts and font sizes, copy and paste.
Powerpoint: Fourth graders create a Powerpoint about the Solar System. They do research on the Internet for this project.
Fifth Grade: Microsoft Word-Students continue to expand on their skills by adding clip art, font colors, cutting and pasting.
Powerpoint: Fifth graders create a Powerpoint about Famous Authors. They too use the Internet for their research.
Microsoft Excel: Students create a spreadsheet about the American Revolution using formulas to come up with the answer to questions.
More Happenings
Third through Fifth grades practice their keyboarding skills the first ten minutes of class. We use a piece of software titled "Type to Learn 3". There are 21 lessons in the program. Typically when the students have completed all 21 lessons, they are typing 15-20 words per minute. The students use a keyboard cover to cover the keys during this ten minutes.
Parents are always welcome to stop by the computer lab with your child(ren). The students are proud of their products and would enjoy sharing them with you.
