Job Description:

Picture Day:   Individual Pictures will be taken on Friday, September 26th at 12:20  Return the picture order form on that day and select the pose you want your child to sit for. 

 

Weekly Homework General Description:

1) Each night your student should Read for 20 minutes and record it in their Reading Log.  Your student should bring home a reading log every Monday and return it on Friday morning. Reading logs require a neatly written paragraph answering that week's question.  Reading Logs must be reviewed by a parent and signed to get full credit.   There are four styles of Reading Logs.  I have created a link below, in case your student can't find this weeks reading log:

2)  Each night your student should Independently write for 15 minutes in their writing journal. Each student received a composition book Monday, August, 25th.  Students should write Monday through Thursday and return the writing journal on Friday.  I will grade them over the weekend and return the following Monday.  Each writing piece needs to be dated and initialed by a parent. 

3) Math Study Links come home most evenings.  Look below for the math schedule for this week.

4) Additional work may come home at times.  Work not completed in class will become homework.  Some of the fifth grade research projects do require homework.

Rigby Literacy Theme Test September 24th:  On Wednesday we will be taking a theme test that will focus on consonant blends, inferencing, onomatopoeia and word families. 

Vocabulary Test for Wednesday, September, 24th:  We have started theme 2 of Rigby.  The ten vocabulary words introduced over the next two weeks are: independent, patriotism, declaration, document, version, confidence, convention, proclaim, nation, allegiance. 

Math: - Studying Unit 2 - Adding and subtracting numbers with decimals -   Monday -SL 2.6, Tuesday - No SL, Wednesday - SL2.7,  and Thursday - NoSL, Friday - SL2.8

 

Upcoming Events and Projects:  

Explorer Research Project: Due October 7th - Starting Tuesday, September 23rd students will select an explorer, conduct research in the library for a week, and produce a report.  Below is a link with a Research Paper example.  Click on the link and see what my expectations are:

In Class:

I just finished reading  The City of Ember.  We discussed character maps and focussed on precise listening.  There will be a test at the end of the novel - next Tuesday, September, 23rd. We will start reading Kingdom Keepers by Ridley Pierson on Monday. 

Social Studies:  We begin studying and researching Explorers September, 23rd. This project will mostly be done in school.  However, I do recommend your student has a flash drive to save to. 

Science:  After the explorers project is done, we will start a science unit on magnetism and electricity.  It should be a shocking experience.

Personal Timeline - Penny Project: On Monday, September 15th your student will be assigned a project to be done at home.  Students create a personal time line showing importants dates in their lives.  The rubric will come home on the 15th. The goal of this project is to give students experience creating timelines.  Their explorer report will include a timeline.  It is due on September 18th.

Who Stole the Picasso:  Before we started Felix Navidad, the class was given a homework assignment to solve who stole the Picasso painting.  The students had to read the clues carefully, follow the directions, and write complete sentences on a seperate sheet of paper.  There were many low scores, so I let them correct their papers.  The corrections were do on Thursday, Sept 18th.
