Third grade is a pivotal point in your child's elementary school days. They come to third grade with a foundation of knowledge which they learned in K-2. It is in third grade that your child will learn how to be an independent thinker.

Reading

Reading 30 minutes each night will help insure that your child keep their reading skills fresh. Comprehension in third grade consists of a more deeper understanding of the story, as well as understanding the thoughts and feelings of the characters, and the authors purpose for writing the novel.

Reading Ideas

SPELLING

Spelling words for this year are listed by week. Ten of the spelling words fit a pattern. Your child should be able to apply this pattern to other words with the same pattern. Your student must know their spelling week, as there are weeks that spelling may not occur.

See the link at the bottom of this page.

Writing

In third grade your child will be working on many personal narratives. We work very hard on writing paragraphs.  That means that the students need to understand how to:

o    Write a topic sentence

o    Stick to one topic

o    Add details about the topic

o    Use transition words for those details

o    Write a concluding sentence that connects to the topic

In addition, third graders should be able to answer questions about books and passages they are reading. On a weekly basis, your child could also write about the trips they have taken. Keeping a journal will help keep ideas fresh in your child's mind. The following website has some terriffic ideas on writing. Enjoy!

Math

*Please practice addition, subtraction and multiplication facts as often as possible.

Your child will use the math skills they learned in 2nd grade to help them in 3rd grade. This Everyday Math Website http://www1.center.k12.mo.us/Edtech/edm/3.htm has lots of great games to make learning fun. Some of the games are played in the classroom.

Everyday Math goals are listed on the webpage below. Some of the goals throughout the year may be a new concept for your child or something familiar with but will continue to build on. Please check the Everyday Math link to help you know what your child is working on.

At the beginning of each unit you and your child should look over the Family Letter. The Everyday Math Family Letters are sent home at the beginning of the school year in a lavendar booklet. You may also find them on the web page below.
